EXTD=In a New York radio interview in 1973 John Lennon\nannounced that
EXTD= one of the bands he was currently listening\nto was called Genes
EXTD=is - a feather in the cap of a young\nstruggling five piece despe
EXTD=rate to succeed in "the colonies"\nwhere we were busy "Selling En
EXTD=gland" at the time. So why \nrevisit the same period of material 
EXTD=over\ntwo decadeslater with an alternative, albeit enlarged, cast
EXTD=\nyou may ask?\n\nWhat makes it so special in the first place?\n\nBy 
EXTD=way of explanation ...\n\nSuffice to say that the Out Patients Dep
EXTD=t. is headed up by\nDr. B. Bruford, Dr. C. Thompson and myself pl
EXTD=us many\nothers who would qualify as permanent members of staff\nb
EXTD=ut for their continuing services to a genre let's call\n'permissi
EXTD=ve' rather than progressive music.  The main thing\nis you don't 
EXTD=need the 'right' regimental tie or even a \ntie-dyed tee shirt, y
EXTD=ou know you're crazy or you wouldn't\nhave read this far ... Seri
EXTD=ously, we hope these \nre-approached songs defy logic sufficientl
EXTD=y to take you on\na journey rarely experienced on the available a
EXTD=irwaves!\n\nPerhaps the new-comer of late-comer to the band's work
EXTD=\ndeserves a little light shed on the background of the original\n
EXTD=perpetrators of these dastardly deeds...\n \nFrom 1971 the band li
EXTD=ne up included Tony Banks, Phil\nCollins, Peter Gabriel, Mike Rut
EXTD=herford and myself...\nseemingly incompatible musical influences 
EXTD=merged into\nsongs that started out at point 'A' and occasionally
EXTD= ended\nat around point 'Q' ... Some felt that the shorter form l
EXTD=ater\nexplored was perfection itself but many aficionados of the\n
EXTD=band's early work fely disenfranchised and preferred the\nepisodi
EXTD=c approach which meant that nobody knew for \ncertain, least of a
EXTD=ll we writers, where a song, once started,\nwould end up - the de
EXTD=mocratic writing process open to a\nfive-sided team was able to c
EXTD=ombine influences ranging \nfrom science fiction to Greek mytholo
EXTD=gy ...\n\nBut where was personal experience in all this?  Did the\n
EXTD=British single sex education system have something to do\nwith it
EXTD=?  Certainly it was very difficult to communicate our\nfeelings t
EXTD=o (or about) girls ... we were accused of using a\nreference libr
EXTD=ary approach!  Roamce was expressed as an\narea found, perhaps, b
EXTD=etween Ancient Greece and Rome\nitself ... underneath Marcus Aure
EXTD=lius? ... could one find it \nin Giotto? ... Da Vinci? ... Basica
EXTD=lly anywhere other than in\nthe arms of the girl next door (or ev
EXTD=en next county)!\n\nStill, enough of history.\n\nThe biggest problem
EXTD= facing the present crew on this\naffectionate backwards glance w
EXTD=as ... would we be\naccused of messing with people's childhoods? 
EXTD= Were they\never children in the first place or could they face t
EXTD=he\nchanges that time would bring ...?  What would is sound like\n
EXTD=if occasional members of Genesis, King Crimson, Yes,\nZappa, Asia
EXTD=, Weather Report, The Zombies, Mike & The\nMechanics, GTR, Ace - 
EXTD=not to mention the Royal\nPhilharmonic Orchestra - all got togeth
EXTD=er with other\nsalubrious pals to form a massive team just for a 
EXTD=few\nminutes?\n\nThe answer, Dear Listener, lies with you.\n\nYour ro
EXTD=ller coaster is ready Madam and Yes Sir, there will \nbe some une
EXTD=xpected twists and turns.\n\nMeanwhile, for the guy who turned up 
EXTD=at a gig with a\ngaping head wound after a motor cycle accident a
EXTD=nd then,\nafter the last note was played, went to the hospital an
EXTD=d\neventually had stitches, to the rest of you who simply keep\nco
EXTD=ming back for more music, thanks for the continued\nsupport and f
EXTD=or encouraging this revisit to that strange but\nbeautiful planet
